Another Way
In the gentle stillness of my morning prayers, as I reflect on the congregation and the community I serve, the question of life's worth often comes to my heart. What is a life worth? It's a profound question that underpins much of what we do and believe as pastors, as shepherds of God's flock.
A life, any life, is an immeasurable treasure. From the moment of conception to the last breath, each second is imbued with divine intention and purpose. The Scriptures tell us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, crafted in the image of God Himself (Psalm 139:14). Each person is a unique, irreplaceable tapestry of experiences, emotions, and potential. When I look at my congregation, I don't just see faces; I see stories, each one an epic narrative of struggles, joys, defeats, and victories.
Jesus spoke of the good shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to find the one lost sheep (Luke 15:4). Why would the shepherd do this? Because to the shepherd, each sheep is invaluable. Similarly, to God, and therefore to a pastor, each individual holds immense worth. Our worth isn't determined by our wealth, status, achievements, or any earthly measure. Our worth is inherent from our Creator. "But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered" (Luke 12:7). If God's attention to us is so meticulous, so intimate, can our value be anything less than extraordinary?
However, understanding the worth of a life isn't merely philosophical or theological; it's intensely practical. It influences how we care for our flock. As pastors, we are called to love, serve, protect, and guide. We are entrusted with the spiritual well-being of our congregation, and this is a sacred responsibility. We rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15). In every interaction, whether it's a joyous celebration or a somber funeral, we are there to affirm the value of each life and each soul.
Life's worth is also reflected in how we address the challenges our community faces. Be it poverty, injustice, illness, or loneliness, these aren't just social issues; they're personal, affecting real people with immeasurable worth. Our response to these challenges is a testament to what we believe about the value of a life. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus, serving the least of these (Matthew 25:40), and advocating for the voiceless. This service isn't out of obligation but out of a deep understanding of the value of each person we serve.
And what of suffering? It's perhaps in suffering that life's worth is most profoundly tested and demonstrated. As a pastor, I've witnessed the incredible resilience and dignity of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable pain. I've seen families cling together in faith even as they say goodbye to a loved one. In these moments, life's worth shines brightest. It's not diminished by pain or hardship. If anything, it becomes more apparent. The comfort and hope we offer aren't just platitudes; they're anchored in the reality of a God who loves us so profoundly that He walked among us, suffered for us, and ultimately, gave His life for us.
But let's also talk about joy, for a life's worth is often most celebrated in moments of joy. Every wedding, baptism, or simple gathering where love and fellowship are shared, I see the tangible expressions of life's worth. In laughter, in tears of happiness, in the communal worship where voices rise in unison to praise God, the value of life is echoed in every note, every smile.
As I continue my journey as a pastor, I am continually humbled by the worth of the lives I'm privileged to serve. I am reminded that my role is not to judge or condemn but to point to the One who gives life its worth. My message is one of hope and salvation, of a love so vast and deep that it transcends all understanding.
In conclusion, what is a life worth? It's worth everything. It's worth the sacrifice of the Son of God, the continuous care of the Creator, and the relentless pursuit of the Holy Spirit. It's worth every effort we make to love, serve, and cherish one another. As a pastor, this understanding shapes every sermon I give, every prayer I whisper, every hand I hold, and every life I touch. May we all grasp even a fraction of this truth, for in it lies the key to truly living and loving as we were meant to.
